City of West University Place Conservation

To inspire children of this “small town within the city,” to adapt environmentally-friendly habits, City of West University Place decided to custom wrap trash and recycling receptacles in their public spaces. The goal was to inspire the public to seek out these receptacles, along with learning what can be recycled, composted, or trashed. The result was to convert these utilitarian vessels into friendly “West U Monsters” who want to be fed according to their specified “diet.” Each monster speaks to the public through speech bubbles that illustrate where to dispose of unwanted items. The receptacles are eye-catching and bright, and bring fun pops to this charming small-town-in-the-city.

The partner project to the trash and recycling bins is an activity booklet encouraging children to initiate conversations with parents and guardians about water conservation in the home. The booklet introduces a mascot, Willie the Waterdrop, who provides information on how to reduce water waste.

These campaigns give families a fun, interactive, and informative approach to keeping West U a clean, ecologically conscious community for all generations.
